Your melancholy musings about the glamour of the vaudeville age put me in mind of Woody Allen’s latest movie, Midnight in Paris. In it, an aspiring current-day writer dreams of living in 1920s Paris and an aspiring set designer he meets (and falls in love with) in 1920s Paris dreams of living during Belle Epoque (1890s) Paris. Do you realize that we mere readers, we dream of living and writing beautifully like, well, Juliette Z Tang now?. Cheers!
My friend Dan took me to see Midnight in Paris this past spring when it played at the Sundance Kabuki Theater in SF (where you can buy a bottle of vino and bring it with you to your seat) and I enjoyed myself immensely. Kathy Bates as Gertrude Stein and Adrian Brody as Salvador Dali was inspired casting!
